Learned a new thing from this, and that's kind of the problem.
Learned something new, but feel species is a much more user-friendly term.
I think Clade would be too unusual for people who don't already know the definition, and as a biologist, I'm not even familiar with it (granted, don't do bio-things that involve this terminology).
Thank you for raising a suggestion and partaking in making WA a better place. I am afraid although I understand the request, I, on this occasion, must disagree and feel species template is more accessible and supplier for those where perhaps English isn't their first language.
1. do you not have imagination? no one's holding you at gunpoint and forcing you to take the template name and fields literally. 2. you'll be shocked to find out that some of the different template buttons link to the same template. the reason for this is people complaining about semantics like you are doing right now 3. why do you hate ESL people? tho I'm actually convinced that 99% of native speakers wouldn't know what a cade is either
Just no, I have nothing else to say other than this seems like you want to be petty because something isn't at your standards.
We get it, you think you're smart. You want to show off your science intellect. But we just need to bring the common sense back.
Not for or against, but I always figured species is just a name for the template. Use it how you want. I have species and genera articles using that template and by the end of WE I am planning to have entire families and orders of life as well.
It's already confusing enough to figure out what makes species a species as non-native speaker, do we really need another term that majority has no clue about?
This is pedantic at best. The general user understands the intent of the template named "species" but would be confused by the term "clade," which is not a common term.
Dictionary.com has a couple definitions, and here are the first two: 1. a class of individuals having some common characteristics or qualities; distinct sort or kind. 2. Biology. the major subdivision of a genus or subgenus, regarded as the basic category of biological classification, composed of related individuals that resemble one another, are able to breed among themselves, but are not able to breed with members of another species. The article template is using the first definition, rather than the second, more specific definition. As others have said, it is possible to make your own world more specific with custom templates for each rank.
Species is what you'll see any usual English speaker using for a species like humans, dogs, flowers etc. Nobody's gonna use the specific term you found. This feels malicious and overly petty.
Although I'm aware of the complex taxonomy for lifeforms, I would need to look up what exactly "clade" refers to. I'm neither a biologist nor a native English speaker, so renaming the template would be very confusing for me. I agree with CraniumBeaver - this does sound like a use case for custom templates.
Much though I like the thought behind this, most people will not understand what a Clade is - currently, the best solution would be to use some manner of code override to make certain articles publicly call themselves a Clade article while technically being the Species template. 98% of people will have zero idea what a Clade is, and so an official rename of the article template would just result in most people never using it and asking for Species article templates without realizing one already exists. Smol upvote because the intent behind this suggestion is good, it's just that the suggestion is likely to cause needless confusion to most folks if it were implemented.
This will help some users but hinder some users. And the latter group is surely much bigger. If you want to use the term "clade" instead of "species" in your world, you can make a custom article template based on the species-template and name the new template "clade". Or maybe make custom templates for everything: genus, family, phylum, etc. Sky's the limit! Clade / Clada might be a correct scientific name, but this is not a university. Nobody will understand what is going on if this happens.
