maps -pins random-generators
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
It would be really fun to have a randomized option for where a pin will show up on a map when viewed and it changes for each view. Currently map pins are static, which makes sense for most situations. This would add some interactivity.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
The idea came up as some friends and I discussed how we might show where cryptids are on a map I'm working on. We'll use a map pin and every once in a while I'll go in and move it. But it would be better if the monster on the map could show up in random places on the map.
It would be best if we could define an area or two for it to be within. (Like I have a town underground and I don't want it wandering into the mountain/underground where they'd be trying to go through solid rock.) Also it would be cool to have the marker show up on a random place on a path.
I'm not asking for TTRPG levels of interaction here. Just like a random generator except for map pins on the map - randomized coordinates.
What are other uses for this feature request?
interactivity for story telling and TTRPGs. (random encounters)
showing which characters are in what area
showing a shifting gate or town where it LAST was known to be
showing where a randomized portal spits people out
"tracking" the movement of animals or herds
police reports - last know whereabouts of a criminal
storm tracking
That's just getting started with ideas! I can think of MANY more ideas for this!!! But I'll stop here.
The Team's Response
Thanks for the suggestion! While it sounds like a very fun idea, it's also too specific for us to consider. However, you can achieve this though the API, and we think it would be a great use for it!
