Add the capacity for more eras when implementing Chronos

Calendar era eras chronos timeline upgrade

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

In the current date/time system, there is only the option for 2 eras, such as BC and AD. Given the crazy number of worlds and their hugely varying mechanicsnot to mention the beliefs of their peoples, it is entirely reasonable to expect that some peoples might measure their time in any number of eras. For example, a civilization might have a cycle of ages rather than just years. You might have "Year 321, Age of the Chicken," or some such, followed by "Year 1, Age of the Hound." I understand that Project Chronos is still in progress, but I find it unlikely that Chronos is currently intended to remedy this particular issue, given our typical fixation on the BC/AD template.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Adding the capacity to add an arbitrary number of ages with their own names and abbreviations at some point during Project Chronos would be the direct solution to the issue, and from a coding perspective I can't imagine that it would be much more difficult that having two eras, although it's true that an end-year field would have to be added to all but the most recent era. I don't expect this feature to be implemented before Chronos is completed, but I would very much like to see included.

What are other uses for this feature request?

There are none. It is simply allowing the addition of more fields in a feature which already supports two.

The Team's Response

The original posted found out that there is the capability of creating multiple eras online (see Discussion link). This is already a feature of World Anvil. Please take the time to explore Eras under TImelines <3

The Eras you are referring to are the World Overrides, not the Eras that you can create in Timelines. You can have as many eras as you want in Timelines.

My current world timeline was divided into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd kingdom so being able to set up the timeline as such would be great.

Maybe I just haven't used calendars and timelines enough, but we can already use multiple eras in a timeline, can't we? Why would this not carry over to Chronos?

This would be very helpful as it lets you tailor it to the setting.

One of my worlds does not use our modern-day standard era break (AD/BC) method. Instead, it creates its eras based on the world-wide wars that occur - it is a very war-torn world, and so rather than BC/AD, you have things like Sorrows Year 4, and Spellflow Year 20, and Mage Year 1,000.   This would allow me to maybe actually make use of the timeline system properly for Alluani.
