Community Stream on the Dashboard

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

I miss the days where the old dashboard had the community stream tagged to it, I liked being on one place that had all my world/author information as well as the community so I could see what is going on without moving to a new screen or tab. I feel like the community is being left out of much of the recent updates, I have to move away from what I'm doing to even see it. Many of our fellow writers make posts, but I have to go through a few steps just to see what's going on if I'm not following an author or world.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

I feel like it will add a much needed return to form. The Dashboard is so close to being perfect in my opinion, all it's lacking is the actual community. Sure seeing the featured article and a few recent articles is nice, but I want to see more. I feel like if someone makes a global post, it shouldn't be in it's own little corner that it seems like a lot of people are forgetting about. Let us see everything in one place at a glance.

What are other uses for this feature request?

It can help us all keep an eye on upcoming things. I have to actually go to the community stream to see if there are any new challenges, if there are any worlds that seem pretty cool, or if there are any updates from authors I like. It would be nice to have it all in once place. I feel like this could be used as a better jumping off point than only looking at the metrics for the world I own.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! There are performance concerns here, as the posts are community created and we can't easily control which parts of a post load and which ones don't (for example, a user could embed 10 massive images in a post, which would then massively slow down your world desktop when loading). However, we've discussed some options to provide a more direct door into this part of the community from the world desktop without the performance issues, and we have some ideas! So this is accepted, but don't expect it until the full desktops are released, it won't be implemented into the current interim desktop.

I really miss the old community stream on my dashboard. The soul of world anvil is its community in my opinion. To have the posts visible again and not hidden away in a tab is a great proposal :)

While I do like and appreciate my world metrics, they don't change frequently enough for me to need it on a main dashboard. I think having those stats near world word count might be neat though. I do like the overall direction thus far... though mobile navigation is it's own challenge

This person is right. However, maybe all community stuff should move into the already-done Community Tab and everything not communal (like Official WA competitions) should be elsewhere. Not sure where though.

I don't like navigating the community modal, there are too many things to click, it's a small space on my already small enough screen, I'd love to have more community features on the dashboard!
