Add successor - predecessor relationship type between characters

relationships characters heritage successor predecessor royalty

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Figuring out the lineage and succession of characters can get messy, because it isn't always a simple transition of power upon the death of the previous holder. The relationship system exists and is quite reliable, so adding additional relation types (like the sibling or spouse options we currently have) could expand the use cases greatly.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By adding a new type of relationship, lines of succession can be more easily tracked on a character-by-character basis, and, if it were extended into a network like the family tree, could even be represented in a pleasing visual diagram.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This expands the use case for the relationship system beyond being a familial relationship system and into being a useful tool for keeping track of other important relationships between characters. i.e., multiple students to a master, or even tracking how a character develops from apprentice, to lover, to successor. It could even be used to extend the current family tree system by highlighting the line of succession in a royal family.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We're closing this because, currently, content trees can already do this (Learn guide: https://www.worldanvil.com/learn/content-trees/content-trees). In the future, an update to family trees will make it possible to have more free-form trees, not necessarily based on actual family, which would cover this too.

If I could vote more than 300 coins I would. There are a lot of use cases in my world for this feature

Going along with what was stated before, this does seem like a useful addition to organizations with the added benefit of being usable by more builders. Not everyone is going to feel able to justify paying for a Grand Master subscription just to access this as a family tree feature, so having it available for both might be a good idea.

Having a non-family succession chart would be very useful to include in the organisations chart yo allow for charting the history of an organisation. This could also be used in non-family transfers of power in countries (or similar). Finally, as discussed, if the head of a family doesn't follow a pattern then this added functionality will add this more easily as well.

It would maybe fit better with organisations but either way, a good idea

Adding a succession type relationship to characters would be very useful to me.
