What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
In a recent feature suggestion about travel corridors, DMFW mentioned air and sea routes. While I couldn't support that particular suggestion, it made me notice that oceanic and atmospheric features are not well represented in the geographical features template. I suggest adding "current", "gyre", and "jet stream" at a minimum, with consideration for "upwelling/downwelling", "air mass", "wind belt", "atmospheric trough", "cloud band", and "persistent storm".
How does this feature request address the current situation?
I have an article about an ocean gyre that I listed as a "region" because nothing else fit. When I start getting more in depth about the ocean trade and its routes, I'll want to be able to identify the currents and wind patterns critical to navigation. Also, I recently started developing a sub-ocean civilization, and deep-water circulation patterns are something I have to think about.
Admittedly, atmospheric features are more difficult to pin down and arguably not as geographic, but jet streams and wind patterns and troughs are natural parts of a world, with significant impact on aircraft and sailing ships.
What are other uses for this feature request?
These terms also expand the options for labelling features of gas giants and ocean worlds.
Thanks for listening!
Follow up
Thank you to everyone who supported this request! Also I would like to apologize to DMFW--I wanted to give you credit but shouldn't have been so negative about it. I really feel like this was your idea.
The Team's Response
Thanks for the suggestion! This has been added (or will be added very soon), with a couple more we thought about. Enjoy your air and sea routes! :)
