Remind Users When Attempting to Edit a Contest Submission

contest-entry editing disqualify

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Right now, during the time after an article has been submitted for a contest such as Summer Camp and the contest is closed, editing is still possible, and per the rules of the contest, may result in the article's disqualification, even if the edit was something as simple as updating a link to another article. I would propose that a pop up reminder be added so that any attempts to edit an article during the judging window, which have been submitted in Contest Mod, will alert the user that editing the article may result in disqualification.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

This would prohibit accidental edit of an article keyed to a particular contest entry. If a world has enough articles, the author may not have it immediately in mind that a particular article might be part of a contest. The reminder would allow the author to table editing until after the judging period.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This need not apply to only Summer Camp, but any contest (conceivably even an informal one) in which the author is participating.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! This is closed due to lack of interested from the community compared to the size of the feature.

Accidental edits seem like a common problem every year for summer camp, yeah.   To maximize utility, maybe there should be a "lock" option for articles in general: turn on the lock, and if you open it up in the editor, it tells you it's locked and you'll have to unlock it to edit.   Then just have the article submission thing automatically lock the article - or have a subroutine or something that auto-locks all articles that have been submitted through the submission system as part of the event close.   (That latter part might need to be part of the general event system overhaul that's been planned at some point, much like fixing the glitch that happens when you unpublish a submitted article.)

If we could make it possible that the article edit doesn't save until the popup is acknowledged, that would also save a lot of accidental edits! I see at least three people every judged challenge saying "oh no, i think i just accidentally typed a letter in a judged article after the submission period..." At least having the popup reminder would enable the back button so nothing gets changed unless they want to.

I think this is a great feature addition as I am known to edit an article when inspiration hits and forget about the fact it may be in a competition.

Makes a lot of sense. In addition, I would be inclined to the idea of the popup window suggesting a copy of the article for edits. This could ensure that the summer camp article remains open for judging, and remedy such issues with copying CSS or BBCode as discussed bellow.

Similar requests were declined in 2021 and closed in 2022.   I'd love some way to prohibit edits, especially since something as simple as sending a notification can count for one. My Event Quarantine category only helps so much. I suspect any sort of "Contest Flag" would need to be a manual option in order to support entries to unofficial challenges.

I include CSS and BB-code in my articles, and opening one to copy-paste said CSS or BB-code will result in an official autosaved edit of the article. Which utterly terrifies me.

That would be nice I think I had ones dropped because I thought the window was closed and I was wrong.
