What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

It would be nice to be able to view our maps on a 3D Globe projection similar to maptoglobe.com, currently we can only have rectangular and flat style map projections.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

This allows people to depict more accurate satellite style maps and adds more interactivity and functionality to depicting our maps.

What are other uses for this feature request?

The feature as a whole could lay the ground work for additional map additions like atmospheric effects, storm effects, etc... It is primarily a nice-to-have. Especially for premium members looking to take their map customization up a notch.

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! Unfortunately, as cool as 3D stuff is in general, 3D maps are too complex and not within the scope of World Anvil. However, if you make a 3D map with other software (such as Map to Globe) you can then embed it as a 3D graphic in any of your articles (although it won't have any of our interactive map features). This guide explains how to embed media players on World Anvil (including a couple of external 3D viewers that you could use).

Other softwares that are specialized for this exists, and from a world building point of view, this sounds like more trouble than its worth. Would take time and resources just to have a globe, even more if it's interactive. On top of that, atmospheric effects are either non permanent, so should be described in your world building but not present on a "neutral state of the world" map, or permanent in which case they should be visible on a flat map and made so during the map making process.   For "More accurate" maps, or more functionality, a combination of a projecting tool like many others recommended and a map making software is what you're looking for ; Making a map a globe does not immediately make it more accurate to anything.   In the long run, there could also start to be people with non-globe fantasy worlds request their particular shape, and it would deviate, I believe, from what WA is.

"This is not a map-making software." Who wants to be we see those words in the dev response? Its oft-repeated.   You can add your map as an overlay in google earth, did you know?   If you want something else, try Nasa's little G.Projector   https://www.giss.nasa.gov/tools/gprojector/

As you suggested, use maptoglobe.com and then import the globe you create there as a gif. That's what I did. The maptoglobe.com site isn't awesome, but it works. WA is a worldbuilding site, not a mapmaking site, and this suggestion is for an even more specialized function than general mapmaking. I don't think it's the right fit for WA, but I agree that having a representation of your world as a globe is cool.

This would be a great feature! While worldbuilding is not just maps, maps are very important to it. I would love to see maps in more detail!

It would be awesome to see the world you've created as it is "for real". To put pins on a globe instead of a map.

While this does sound cool, it might unfortunately be too specialized for WorldAnvil. It’s a world building site after all, not just a mapmaking site. I can’t say for sure because I’m not part of the Team, but from my understanding, this one might not be fully related to the site’s goals. (Also, it might be kind of difficult to implement from a practical standpoint.)
