secrets -productivity articles

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently we write articles and secrets separately (as far as I know at least) This implies a lot of article-/tab-hopping. Currently this approach does not allow fully maximized productivy.    As far as I know I can link secrets with articles, but I can not have them directly "in" the article, which would make things faster and more managable.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

With the feature we will have a much more streamlined workflow: Write an article e.g. about a location.  Like general description etc plus some secrets as well - all in the same article.    With the new feature I could then mark relevant paragraphs as secrets, hiding them for my party.  Advantages of this feature:  1. This way I only need to share one article with my group 2. I can unhide secrets in the article as soon as they discover them.  3. I can use the article as a script, since it contains all relevant information for me, because as a DM I can see them right away, without switching tabs.

What are other uses for this feature request?

In the long run this feature could be expanded: E.g. with a EventListener-logic like: OnUnlock: Gain 100 EXP to the unlocking party or so, which will further streamline DM-ing with World Anvil.    In case there is no feature like this, maybe you may find time to consider this. Thank you and keep up the good work.    Best regards,   Tim

Follow up

After reviewing the comments I noticed that my description seems to be clear for most, but not for all, so I would like to add this little update for further clarification: Yes, I am aware that at this state it is possible to embed secrets into articles. And I think this is a great thing already. But the UX/usability of this is not optimal. Using this workflow takes some steps: 1. Create an article, 2. create a secret to have access to the secret's ID, 3. copy the secret ID, 4. hop back to the article, 5. paste in the secret ID + formatting. So currently it takes 5 steps, which implies that for DMing it is currently quicker to just write all secrets into a private DM article and share the info with the group as soon as they unlock the bits. My suggestion is to consider adding an additional functionality (probably in the text edit bar) that allows users to write plot articles in one go without any tab-hopping: 1. Write the whole article including secrets, 2. highlight passages to mark as secrets. That would only be two steps and this way it would increase the productivity quite significantly.   Technical consideration: I assume that the implementation into the existing secret system might prove difficult from a technical point of view though, since text formats do not refer to IDs. My intention is to help DMs prepare a session quicker. Therefore the implementation could be realized with a text option like "hide the marked text for all except the author". The DM/author can then later edit the passage into a regular text, without any secret-hopping or group-assignment. The disadvantage of this simplified approach is, that it only works for 1DM-1group-constellations.   Best case solution: The best possible UI/UX solution for authors would probably be (in my personal opinion): The user can mark a text passage, right click it to open a dropdown menu at the cursor position, select "secret for..." and assign "all" or "group A" from a consecutive dropdown. Later I could rightclick the secret in the article again and select "reveal for...">"Group A". I hope this make sense. As a UE game developer I can almost "see" the UI, but I know that the WA system is very complex and many systems have deep interdependencies, therefore this is just a friendly suggestion. I hope this helps :)

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! We're closing this because we don't see how we could realistically make the system faster when it comes to secret creation. Creating secrets while you're actively editing an article is already possible. Simply click the green double-chevron button at the bottom right and select Secret. The Secret editor will open without closing the article—and with the recent Visual Editor release, the process is even faster.   As a Grandmaster, you also have access to subscriber containers, which let you create "secrets" in-line: https://www.worldanvil.com/learn/access-rights/subcontainers
