Copies were in the hands of both empires' military commands within thirty days of publication. The author was informed of this eighteen months later. She did not comment publicly. Her private response is preserved in a letter to a colleague, a single line of which has survived: "I knew when I wrote it. I published it anyway. I do not know what that makes me."
